Job Description

NAU Career Development empowers students and alumni to confidently navigate their careers as citizens of an evolving and global world. NAU Career Development, part of Student Affairs, is physically located in the University Union. We are a small but dynamic team focused on preparing students for the 21st Century workforce and workplace, though career advising and education, connecting students to job and internship providers, and promoting consistent, compliant, and meaningful student employment and internship experiences. We are also responsible for collaborating with other NAU career development offices, a variety of student affairs programs, faculty, and other university departments to ensure that students receive a clear, consistent message regarding career development. We are looking for an individual to join our Career Programming team, providing career education and advising to NAU students of all academic years and majors through individual appointments, group workshops, and self-paced resources. Our priority for the upcoming academic year will be working with stakeholders across the university to integrate career content into students’ curricular and co-curricular experiences. We seek a professional committed to growing with the team during an exciting time. Specific responsibilities include:

Career Advising and Education (60%)

    Advise individual students on resume/cover letter development, interview skills, and job search strategies, for student employment, internships, and full time employment. Provide expertise to students on a variety of career exploration tools and related resources, such as O*Net, MBTI, CliftonStrengths, or others.Conduct workshops of varying sizes (up to 100 students) on a variety of topics including resumes/cover letters, interview skills, job search strategies, networking/relationship building, and strengths/interests/values/personality and their impact on career decisions and transferable skills.Customize and deliver college/program-specific programming or other specialized initiatives.Develop communications, working with NAU entities to promote Career Development, its services, and its benefits electronically, in print, and via other channels. Create and maintain online and print career resources for students.Assist in the planning/implementation of career and job fairs.
University Partnerships (30%)

    Serve as the liaison to one or more academic colleges. Develop and nurture relationships within the college(s) with faculty, academic advisors, career development offices where applicable, and other staff, building deep functional knowledge of the career development needs of that college's student population.Serve as the liaison to one or more Student Affairs programs (e.g., Veterans and Transfer, First Generation, Residence Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life) developing and nurturing relationships with staff and student leaders, building deep functional knowledge of the career development needs of that program's student population. Serve as the liaison to one or more other NAU programs (e.g., Athletics, Center for International Education), developing and nurturing relationships with program staff and student leaders, building deep functional knowledge of the career development needs of that program's student population. For all liaison roles, identify student career development needs, determine the best career development solutions to meet those needs, and partner to provide services to the assigned student population. May collect and analyze data (qualitative and quantitative) to assess the effectiveness and impact of Career Development programming. Serve on committees such as the Exploratory Working Group, Hiring Committees, etc.
Team Management and Development (10%)

  • Coordinate the activities of graduate assistants and student workers assisting with assigned projects, review and provide feedback on work products, and provide general mentoring and guidance.
  • Review peers' work products and provide feedback.
  • Achieve goals established by Career Development and Student Affairs; report on progress and recommend changes to program based on assessment results.
  • Maintain current knowledge of career development, employment and recruiting trends, college student development, and other related topics as appropriate.
  • May represent NAU Career Development at NAU, regionally, and beyond at conferences, networking events, and other professional development events.
NAU is currently engaged in an Organizational Growth and Effectiveness Initiative, which focuses on positioning the University for future success of its operational practices. As a result, some aspects of this position may be subject to change, such as, but not limited to: duties, titles, reporting structure, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinative program experience; OR,
  • Six years of progressively responsible administrative coordinative program experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in related field (Students Affairs, Business, Organizational Leadership, Human Resources, Education, or other related field.
  • 2+ years experience working in a university setting or industry recruiting.
  • 2+ years experience teaching or facilitating workshops in a higher education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
  • 1+ years program development and implementation in a higher education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
  • Experience developing and nurturing stakeholder relationships across a large, diverse organization.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Knowledge of 21st Century workplace and workforce trends. Knowledge of career development and related theories. Skill in professional communication, both written and verbal. Skill in developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative programs. Strong team development and relationship building skills. Skill in coordinating activities and establishing priorities in a resource-constrained environment.
  • Ability to creatively implement change and thrive in a dynamic organizational setting.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

The budgeted salary amount is $39,000.

This position's pay grade is 43. The salary range for this paygrade can be found on the CLS Grade Schedule.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
